David L. McKenna, D.D.S. (aka “Dr. Dave”)
A Palo Alto native, Cubberley High School graduate and life long Stanford Cardinal sports fanatic. I earned a degree in Biology at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Then it was on to U. O. P. school of Dentistry in S. F.; where I was able to complete my childhood dream of becoming a dentist, enabling me to work with my dad, JB McKenna for 17 years.
Bringing a new meaning to “Family Dentistry” I’ve also been enjoying working with my sister, Judi McKenna Edwards. She is without a doubt a dynamic and energetic force in our practice. I’m grateful for the opportunity to team up with her providing an energy, knowledge and care which I am very proud of.
I have three wonderful children: Kelly, Holly and Mitchell. We love to play games, compete in athletics and hang out with our friends. Who knows, perhaps one (or more?) of my kids may choose to carry on the McKenna family tradition of providing high touch, high quality dentistry!
Faranak “Fara” Shahani, DMD (aka “Dr. Fara”)
Since childhood, dentistry has been my dream profession. Pleasant experiences as a patient increased my admiration for excellent dentists, and unpleasant experiences made me determined to one day provide exceptional dental care to my own patients. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree in biology from UC Santa Barbara, and a Master’s degree in Kinesiology from California State Fullerton, I received a Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine. Currently I am a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, the Northern California Academy of Dental Research, and the Mid-Peninsula and San Mateo Dental Societies.
One of my great enjoyments in dentistry has been the opportunity to participate in several dental missions/organizations (Hearts with Hope and Medical Relief International) that treat under-served patients in 3rd world countries. It’s a labor of love that brings gratifying results, an opportunity to educate, and a service to children in poor countries that they couldn’t otherwise afford.
I always keep up with the latest in dental education at Palo Alto & Bay Area Aesthetic Masters study-clubs and seminars around the country. My goal as a team member at McKenna Family Dentistry is to provide the highest quality dentistry for our patients and to treat our patients as our own family. My priority is to educate patients on all of their options, providing choices depending on the procedures needed to be performed. My ultimate goal is to provide the most comfortable and enjoyable experience for all of our patients and to be the best family dentist I can be for them. My personal interests include outdoor activities, mountain biking, and road trips to explore new places and meet new people. I hope my love for adventure will take me all over the world one day and serve my goal in making a difference in people’s lives. I look forward to meeting you at your next dental visit.
Mimi Salkola (aka “Dr. Mimi”)
I have been very fortunate to have chosen a career where I look forward to coming to work every day since 1998. Seeing my patients in the office is like seeing “Old Friends”.
I grew up in San Jose and graduated from UCSF where I received many awards for academic excellence and earned a place on the Dean’s List.
I have been a long time member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association and Mid-Peninsula dental society. My love for dentistry shows through when I am treating my patients. I strive to be as gentle as possible while creating beautiful and “perfect” dentistry. My motto is “fun, friendly and exceptional dental care”. My goal is to make every one of my patient’s visits pleasant and enjoyable.
In my spare time I enjoy watching funny movies with my 9 and 12 year old sons. Our favorite is “Dumb and Dumber”. I also volunteer in their schools where I teach the children about dental health and help raise funds for the schools. I love music and will sing all day if I am allowed. My Karaoke parties are well known in my neighborhood. I also enjoy going to the opera with my husband and take long, long walks, especially in the rain. In addition, I can bake bread that will make a grown man cry, a skill I learned from Eske, a friend who used to be a patient in this office until he moved back to Denmark. My latest passion is hula dancing which I’ve been learning mostly from YouTube videos. Who knows…. you might just get a hula performance instead of a filling the next time you are in the office. Aloha!

The McKenna Dental practice, father, son and daughter exhibited extreme professional competence, kindness and compassion for the 30 years I have had the privilege of being their patient.
